Chinese astrology and Tao philosophy holds that there are 108 sacred stars.
In ancient India, vedic seers had calculated the following distances which modern scientific measurements have reconfirmed: the distance between the Earth and Moon is 108 times the diameter of the Moon, the distance between the Earth and Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Sun, and that the diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.
In Hindu Astrology there are 12 Rashis or Zodiacs and 9 Planets or Navagrahas. 12 X 9 = 108. There are 27 Lunar mansions or Nakshatras which are divided in 4 Padas or quarters each. 27 X 4 = 108.
Hindu deities have 108 names. Recital of these names, often accompanied by counting of 108-beaded Mala. The human body is thought to have 108 pressure points where consciousness and flesh intersect giving rise to the living being.

The Number 108 in Popular CultureEdit
In the television series LOST, a underground bunker, or "hatch," controlled a leakage of electromagnetic energy by computer, and the computer had to be reset every 108 minutes. The heiroglyphs on the wheel of numbers are said by the creaters of LOST to stand for "underworld." The other numbers of LOST which appear in many places and incidents surrounding the characters all add to 108: 4, 8 ,15, 16, 23, 42.
